Interview environments often put pressure on the candidate(s). In some cases, this makes sense, life can be competitive. It can be so competitive, that we forget our own needs (further discussion about competing for extraordinary achievement found in my other blog post here). One of these needs is engaging more in job interviews to ensure their suitability and that they meet your expectations and needs. Both the interviewer and interviewee have likely worked very hard to get to where they are now and want to pursue opportunities they consider to be mutually beneficial. Considering factors such as compatibility and expectations can make a huge difference in the way we work with one another before making an agreement so we can achieve longevity and happiness at work. Here are some questions you might consider asking your interview in your next potential career opportunity.
Interview Questions to ask an Employer:
1. What types of career growth could the successful candidate earn from this position?
2. What are your expectations from the successful candidate in 5 years, if hired?
3. How does your company deal with employee safety? If an event occurred, such as discrimination, what would the company’s action or policy be?
4. What type of orientation or training would the successful candidate receive or requirements for this position?
5. Could there be an opportunity for the successful candidate to join or start a workplace committee? What types of committees are within the company?
6. What do you enjoy most about working here?
7. What are the company’s values? How are they reflected in day-to-day work?
8. How would you describe the work culture and environment within the company?
9. How does the company foster work-life balance?
10. May I contact you if further questions arise? Where and when would you like me to contact you?
These questions will help the interviewee get to know who they could potentially be working with and what kind of culture & values they pursue. We often spend a lot of time and energy in our job and we by asking questions we are taking care and looking out for of ourselves. Researching companies online can help us pursue what we think we might want however asking these questions offer a deeper understanding which a public image may not offer.
